Trail Endurance Challenge at Deer Grove East

OUTLAST Chicago is a 6-hour endurance event held at Deer Grove East in Palatine. The format requires participants to complete a 5K loop every hour, on the hour. To remain in the event, each lap must be finished within the 60-minute window. Runners who finish a lap early may use the remaining time to rest before the next round begins. Those who fail to complete a lap within the hour are eliminated from the challenge.

The event takes place over two days with separate sessions:

  • 6 Hour Challenge - Saturday
  • 6 Hour Challenge - Sunday

The course features trail-based terrain, including dirt, rocks, roots, and elevation changes. While primarily a natural surface, some sections may include pavement or gravel. Participants may choose to walk the course provided they meet the hourly time limit. This is a cupless event, so participants must bring their own hydration systems, though basic snacks and water are available at the basecamp.

Participants earn rewards based on the number of laps completed:

  • 4 laps: "Grit Earned" patch
  • 5 laps: "Survivor" patch
  • 6 laps: Premium "OUTLAST" medal

Those who complete all six rounds on both Saturday and Sunday receive a special plaque. All registrants receive an event t-shirt. Performance is tracked via individual lap timing, and finishing all six rounds qualifies runners for local awards and a national leaderboard. Participants are permitted to set up their own personal aid stations or tents at the loop start. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
