Overview

The Otter Rail and River Run is an annual community running event held on the village playing field in Tipton St John, Sidmouth. The event is organised by Tipton St John Playing Field Association in conjunction with Sidmouth Running Club and is held under ARC rules.

Distances

  • 10 km off-road race
  • approx. 1 mile fun run

Course and race details

The 10 km is a scenic off-road route that follows public footpaths and rights of way through the Otter Valley. The course runs alongside the River Otter, through Harpford woods, along the old Sidmouth railway line, across fields out to Fluxton and back to the village. The route includes multi-terrain sections and some boggy or puddle-prone parts. The minimum age for the 10 km is 15. The fun run is held on an off-road route contained within or around the field; adults are advised to accompany children under 8 because there can be cows in nearby fields. Prizes or mementoes are provided for finishers, and the 10 km finishers receive Otter Brewery beer as part of the memento.

Logistics

Camping on the playing field is permitted over the weekend; prior booking with the organiser is required. Race administration and facilities are based at the village playing field. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
