Course and logistics
The course starts at the historic mining site of Kentucky Camp and follows forest service roads and trails through the southeastern Santa Rita Mountains, using part of the Arizona Trail. The route includes views of Mt. Wrightson (9,452 feet). The course layout is a 25-mile loop; elevation at the start/finish is 5,142 feet, with overall elevations ranging from 4,031 to 6,232 feet and an average grade of 6%. The 2026 route revision sends runners down Fish Canyon from Melendrez Pass to the Cave Creek aid station and removes the Greaterville trail and the off-trail wilderness bypass. Time limits are 7 hours for the 25-mile event and 15 hours for the 50-mile event.
The event is cupless; each runner receives a reusable collapsible cup at packet pickup. Top three male and female finishers in each event receive awards; all finishers receive awards and there is a post-race cookout. Discounts of 10% apply to Native Americans, active duty military, law enforcement, fire fighters and first responders.
