Ocean Commotion 5K

Ocean Commotion is a multi-format 5K event held at Hermit Island Campground in Phippsburg, Maine, that benefits Marine Mammals of Maine and its work with stranded marine mammals and sea turtles in southern and midcoast Maine. The event offers in-person timed and untimed 5K run and walk options, a weeklong virtual 5K challenge, and a kids 1-mile fun run with no registration fee.

The course follows trails by the ocean and is described as traffic-free coastal scenery where runners, walkers, and canine companions can participate. Timed heats use professional chip timing, and prizes are awarded to top human and canine finishers. The virtual challenge allows participants to run or walk 3.1 miles anytime during the week leading up to the in-person event; participants may recruit friends or family and may share photos on social media with the event hashtags.

Event-related activities include youth and family conservation activities such as a rescue and rehab simulation, ocean-themed coloring, and whale bone puzzles. A race-day raffle and informational booths support the organization’s response, rehab, and outreach work. Registration for in-person 5K options opens June 4, 2026 and closes October 15, 2026 with a fee of $25. Virtual registration opens June 4, 2026 and closes October 17, 2026 with a fee of $10.
