Firebird Trail Races - Windham, Maine

Firebird Trail Races take place in Windham, Maine, and offer multiple off-road distances. The event uses mostly single-track trails through Lowell Preserve and North Falmouth Community Forest.

  • 50K three 10 mile loops in Lowell Preserve and North Falmouth Community Forest
  • Marathon (26.2M) twice around the 13M course
  • 13M one 10 mile loop and a 5k loop in East Windham Conservation Area

The primary loop is a technical trail with rocks and roots. All events start and finish in Lowell Preserve at the Windham Fire Station. The 13M adds a 5k loop on newer East Windham Conservation Area trails; the 50K is three repeats of the 10 mile loop and the marathon follows the 13M layout twice.

There are two aid stations: one at the start/finish and one at the five-mile turnaround. Both stations provide water, soda, chips, candy, and LMNT electrolyte mix. Volunteers staff the stations and runners may leave drop bags at either location.

The course is marked with high-visibility pin flags, LEFT/RIGHT/WRONG WAY signs, and directional arrows; confidence pin flags indicate the correct route.

Participants are asked to make a donation of at least $20 to a nonprofit between 8.25.2025 and 8.21.2026 and to provide proof of donation by 8.21.2026 to confirm entry. The 50K has a 9 hour overall cut-off (about a 17:42 min/mile pace) and all distances must be completed within this time. No refunds are issued; residual profits are donated to a local land trust. Runners in the 50K or marathon may drop down to a lower distance under specified conditions. Each participant receives a wood carved Firebird medal; top non-binary, male and female in each distance receive finisher awards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
