Race formats and distances
The Northumberland Run Forest Run offers multiple course options on forest trails. Distances and formats include:
- 3K loop repeated as part of a 4-hour challenge
- 7.5K single loop
- 9K single loop
- 24.6K full route combining loops and an out-and-back to Lookout Mtn
The 4-hour event requires participants to complete as many 3K laps as they can within the time limit. The 7.5K and 9K options are one-loop runs. The 24.6K option is described as a sequence of the other loops plus an out-and-back to Lookout Mtn.
Logistics, safety, and registration
No marshals are on course; participants are expected to be self-supported. Aid is available at the start area (Location 50 on the course map). Participants should provide their own nutrition and water; a water refill station will be available at the start. Participants may carry a cell phone or sounding device such as a whistle to access help if needed.
Most trails named Purple Finch, Black Oak, and Sweet Fern are free from motorized vehicles, but some trails have vehicle access, for example routes to the Lookout. Trails are narrow at points, so dogs are not allowed. Registration is limited to 100 people. Entry pricing is $35 (January to April), $45 (May), and $55 (June). T-shirts may be purchased during registration for $30. An award for the "Gumpiest person" may be given for Forest Gump inspired attire.
