Northern Nipmuck Trail Race
The Northern Nipmuck Trail Race is a spring trail event held in Union, Connecticut, advertised at 16 miles though the actual distance may be slightly less. The out-and-back course follows the Nipmuck Trail through Yale-Myers Forest, crossing Barlow Mill Road at Two Pipes and turning around near Boston Hollow (also called Alpacaville). The terrain is technical with notable vertical relief; the course is blazed blue and will have flagging at a few tricky spots. Runners are responsible for navigating the route.
Parking is provided at Bigelow Hollow State Park; the race start lies just across the road and a signed trail connects the parking area to the start to avoid road walking. Parking capacity is limited and is the primary constraint on field size. There is no race-day registration; entrants may join a waitlist and are commonly added from it. Check-in and bib pickup are managed at the start, with a late-arrival option for bib pickup.
Minimal aid is provided at Three locations (Two Pipes, Boston Hollow, and another midcourse point) corresponding roughly to miles 4, 8, and 12. Awards and event swag are not offered. Registration opens January 1, 2027 at 12:00 AM ET. Net proceeds after expenses are directed to organizations that support local trail stewardship and related projects; proceeds from the 2022 race helped fund a bridge at the north end of Breakneck Pond. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
