Trail Running at Lake Elmo Park Reserve

The Night Owl event features several trail running options held at the Lake Elmo Park Reserve Nordic Center. Participants can choose between fixed-distance races or a time-based endurance challenge. The course consists of grassy ski trails that travel over rolling hills. While the trails are lit during the evening portions of the event, all participants are required to bring their own supplemental lighting, such as a headlamp or a handheld flashlight.

Available Distances and Formats

Participants can choose from the following event options:

  • 5 km: A single loop course measuring approximately 3.4 miles.
  • 10 km: A two-loop course utilizing the 3.4 mile loop twice.
  • 6 Hour Shuffle: A timed event for individuals or teams.

The 6 Hour Shuffle utilizes a 3.3 mile loop. A smaller 1.2 mile short loop is also available for participants to use when time is running out or as an alternative to the longer loop. This format allows runners to determine the total distance covered within the six-hour time limit.

Registration for the event is limited to ensure a specific capacity. The 5 km and 10 km races have a combined limit of 200 participants, while the 6 Hour Shuffle is limited to 100 participants. The event provides a night running experience on lit trails within the metro area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
