Night Challenge 3: Pier Gates is a night mountain running event in County Wicklow on Friday 9 October 2026. The route is fully marked and GPS use is not allowed. The event difficulty is rated 7 (2,2,3), describing moderate terrain, 200-500 m ascent and courses over 10 km. This is a night race on technical terrain; organisers may carry out random kit checks and failure to carry required items can lead to denied entry or disqualification.

Routes and eligibility

  • 11 km - c.450 m climb; technical terrain, bog, boardwalk, forest trail, open mountain.
  • 5 km - c.170 m climb; forest trail, boardwalk, some technical terrain; no open mountain.

Runners aged 18 or older may enter the long course. Runners and walkers aged 14 or older may enter the short course. Runners are advised to wear grippy footwear. Cake will be provided after the race.

Kit, parking and prizegiving

Mandatory Level B kit includes a waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, a charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. A headtorch and a reflective arm or waist band (or rear light) are also required. Parking and registration are at the Lough Tay / Lough Dan carpark. Usual parking charges apply: 4 euro single occupancy, 3 euro for two in a car, 2 euro for three, and free for four or more.
