Night Challenge 1: Crone Maulin is a mountain running event in County Wicklow. The course distance is 7.40 km with a total climb of 407 m. The route is fully marked and GPS use is allowed. The event difficulty is listed as level 6 - Moderate Terrain, which corresponds to 200 m - 500 m ascent and 6 km - 10 km distance. Prizegiving takes place at the finish.

Course and logistics

The route is a counter-clockwise loop over Maulin, starting at the barrier at Crone car park. Runners follow a short wide-trail section, then a climb through the woods and up the side of Maulin. From the summit there is a short rocky path to a gap in the wall, then left onto the Wicklow Way for a descent past the Powerscourt Waterfall overlook back to Crone car park.

Getting there: take the turn off the N11 at Kilmacanogue towards Roundwood, then the right turn for Powerscourt Waterfall. The Crone Woods car park is on the left about 800 m beyond the waterfall entrance.

Mandatory kit and rules

Mandatory kit level is B - Standard. Required items include a waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, a charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Runners must also carry a suitable torch for running at night and are advised to carry a back-up torch or spare battery. The final kit to be carried will be confirmed at registration and must be carried for the entire race. Headphones are not allowed.
