King of the Mountain - Newcastle Cross Country

The King of the Mountain is a single-day endurance run held on 27 June 2026 that follows bush track and fire trails on Mt Sugarloaf. The course is a 27 kilometre out-and-back route starting from the top of Mt Sugarloaf, descending to Wakefield and returning along the same trail.

Entry and eligibility are managed online. Registration and payment must be completed by 6pm on the Friday before the event. Competitors must be 18 years or older on the day and must wear identification bibs supplied by the organisers; bibs are to be visible at each check point. On the day, check in closes at 11:30am on the mountain. Cut off times apply: two hours to the half way point at Wakefield and four hours to the finish line at Mt Sugarloaf.

Support on course includes aid stations stocked with coke, water and bananas, plus professional first aid and medical support on the course and at the registration desk. Hot soup is provided at the finish. Awards include finisher medals presented to the first three places in the King and Queen categories and mystery prizes for entrants. The event is organised in partnership with RES Contracting and Excavation. NXC members receive free entry with a discount code; non-members pay an entry fee of $100.
