The Newcastle Cross Country King of the Mountain is a 25-kilometer endurance event. The course consists of bush tracks and fire trails, starting at the top of Mount Sugarloaf and descending to Wakefield before returning via the same route.

Course Features and Services

Cut-off times are enforced: 2 hours to the halfway point (Wakefield) and 4 hours to the finish line at Mount Sugarloaf. Aid stations along the course provide water, Coke, and bananas. Professional first aid and medical support are available on the course and at the registration desk. Hot soup is provided at the finish line.

Awards and Entry

The first three finishers in both the King and Queen of the Mountain categories receive run finisher medals, which are presented after the event. All entrants are also eligible for mystery prizes. Entry is free for members of Newcastle Cross Country (NXC), while non-members can enter for a fee of $100. A scenic coastal trail run at Lake Macquarie on July 11, 2026. Choose from 12km, 22km, or 35km distances, plus a kids run. The course travels from lake shore to rugged coastline through bushland and ocean views.
