Nav Challenge 1 - Comeraghs
Nav Challenge 1 takes place in the Comeragh mountains in County Waterford on Sunday 13 September 2026. The event is an unmarked navigational race on open mountain commonage where participants must navigate using map and compass only; electronic navigation is not permitted during the course. The course is offered in two approximate options:
- Long course: 15 to 16 km, 500 to 600 m ascent.
- Short course: 8 to 9 km, 300 to 400 m ascent.
Completion of the long course requires visiting and stamping a card at nine controls; the short course requires five controls. Participants receive map coordinates in Irish Grid format and will search for controls marked with orange and white orienteering kites and punches. A master map showing all control locations will be made available shortly after the start for comparison.
All entrants must carry Level C mandatory kit. This includes a waterproof jacket with hood, head covering, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with emergency contact, foil blanket or bivvy, waterproof full leg cover, at least 500 mL water, emergency food, and a map and compass. Organisers may carry out random kit checks; lack of required items can lead to denied entry or disqualification. Competitors should bring an EastWest Comeragh 1:25,000 map or equivalent map protection and a baseplate hiking compass. There are no on-course aid stations; participants should carry sufficient food and water.
Parking and registration are at Powers the Pot Camping and Caravan Site near Harney's Cross, Clonmel, Co. Waterford. Entry is limited to 250 places and the event is not suitable for juniors under 18. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
