Mynyddoedd Du / Black Mountains Fell Race

Mynydd Du organises an annual grass-roots, non-commercial fell race run for over 30 years in association with the Welsh Fell Runners Association. The route is within the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The course distance is 27.4 km (17 mi) with 1586 m (5203 ft) of climb. The event uses WFRA race classes AL, NS, ER and LK. Race HQ is in Llanbedr and the precise HQ location and parking information are sent to entrants by email. Entrants are asked to travel sustainably where possible.

The route includes five checkpoints, plus the start and finish, visiting summit points such as Pen Cerrig-calch, Pen y Gadair Fawr, Chwarel y Fan, Bal-Bach path junction and Crug Mawr. There are no course markings; competitors must follow open access land and public or permissive rights of way and obey WFRA rules. Each checkpoint must be visited in order and runners must check in at each one.

Full kit is required: waterproof and windproof top and legs, hat, gloves, compass, whistle, map, kit bag and suitable clean footwear. No refreshments or water are provided so participants must be self-sufficient. Trained first-aiders will be at Race HQ and in the race area. Any surplus funds are donated to local Mountain Rescue.
