Mynyddoedd Du / Black Mountains Fell Race

Mynydd Du organises an annual grass-roots, non-commercial fell race held within the Black Mountains. The event has run for over 30 years in association with the Welsh Fell Runners Association and is classified AL, NS, ER, LK. The main route covers 27.4 km (17 mi) with approximately 1586 m (5203 ft) of ascent.

Race administration is based in Llanbedr; the Race HQ location and parking information are sent to entrants by email. Entry is by online advance registration. The course is entirely on open access land and public or permissive rights of way. Competitors must visit five numbered checkpoints in sequence and must check in at each checkpoint; marshals staff each control and a sweeper follows the last runner.

Mandatory kit includes a waterproof and windproof top and trousers, hat, gloves, compass, whistle, map, kit bag and suitable clean footwear. Numbers must be visible at all times. The event is for entrants aged over 18. There are no course markings and no on-course water or refreshments, so runners must be self-sufficient. Cut-offs are used for safety and runners who retire must inform a marshal or race HQ.

First aid is provided at Race HQ and within the race area. Any surplus funds are donated to local Mountain Rescue. The route and past results are available from independent race records. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
