Murderkill Ultramarathons : Killen's Pond State Park, Felton, DE
Murderkill Ultramarathons are looped trail events held within Killen's Pond State Park near Felton, Delaware. Distances offered:
- 50 mile
- 50 kilometer
- 12 hour option
The course is a roughly 3.1 mile loop entirely inside the park. Surface is mostly dirt with some roots, occasional small rocks and rubble. Total climb is low, about 80 feet per loop. The north Pondside Trail is broad and sand and organic based; the south side is single track with roots. An aluminum footbridge and a short loop around the parking area form small nontrail sections.
The route is mostly shaded and passes close to the pond; there are spots near the boat ramp where runners can enter the water. Most participants wear light trail shoes rather than highly technical shoes. A parking area and picnic tables are used for event operations; toilets are located about 50 yards from the picnic area and a porta john may be present near the boat ramp.
Races are run in a Fat Ass style. Events are self supported with a community table for shared items. Water is provided but full aid is not guaranteed. Timing is manual by lap checks. All races have a 12 hour time limit. The event is rain or shine except that thunderstorms will stop the race and prevent further loops.
Entry is limited to 30 runners per race. There is no waitlist, no transfers, and no refunds. Entry fee is capped at $40 plus registration fees; parking and park fees are included and any small excess funds will be donated to the park. The park requests that participants pack out their trash.
