Murderkill Ultramarathons - Felton, DE
This event offers three race options held inside Killen's Pond State Park in Felton, Delaware, about 15 miles south of Dover on U.S. Highway 13.
Race options:
- 50 Miler
- 50K
- 12-hour option
Course and terrain: the course is an approximately 3.10-mile loop contained within the park. The route is almost all dirt with some roots, rocks, and occasional rubble, and about 80 feet of climb per loop. Technical difficulty is low (about 1/10). The north Pondside trail is broad and mostly dirt (sand and organics); the southside is single track with some roots. Non-trail sections include a parking-lot loop of about 0.28 miles and an aluminum footbridge of roughly 0.2 miles. Much of the loop is shaded and there are opportunities to enter the pond near the boat ramp.
Support and logistics: the event uses a "Fat Ass style" format. Races are self-supported with a community table for shared food and drink; water is provided but aid is not guaranteed. Timing is manual by loop checks. Bathrooms are located about 50 yards from the picnic tables; a porta-john may be present near the boat ramp. Parking is ample and adjacent to the course. The park has no trash cans; participants are asked to pack out their waste.
Entry and fees: each race is capped at 30 entrants. There is no waitlist, and no deferrals or transfers. Entry is capped at $40 plus platform fees; that fee covers parking, permit, insurance, and water. There are no refunds.
Weather and safety: late-summer conditions are expected to be hot and humid. The event is rain or shine except in the case of thunderstorms; if thunderstorms occur, runners will be removed from the course as they finish loops and will not be permitted to start additional loops. Violations of safety instructions may result in disqualification.
Nearby services: limited services surround the park. There are nearby gas and convenience stores and lodging options in Harrington, Frederica, or Dover. Cabins and a campground are available at Killen's Pond. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
