Montane Winter Spine
The Montane Winter Spine is a non-stop, 268 mile race along the Pennine Way. The route begins in Edale, Derbyshire, and finishes in Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. Runners have a time limit of 156 hours to complete the course.
The route crosses the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall and the Cheviots, with total ascent of 10,732 metres and total descent of 10,941 metres. Typical January conditions listed include daytime temperatures around 0°C to 10°C and night-time temperatures from -10°C to 2°C. Daylight in January is about eight hours.
Main checkpoints include Birchcliffe, Hawes, Hardraw, Langdon Beck, Alston and Bellingham. Checkpoint facilities include hot meals, hot and cold drinks, sleeping space, toilets and showers at Hawes, Alston and Bellingham, a professional medical crew, resupply bags, weather updates and volunteer support. The race is described as unsupported, though runners may use cafes and pubs along the route; pacing and following support vehicles are not permitted.
Entry requirements state competitors must be at least 21 years old and have relevant endurance or mountain experience. Qualifying experience includes a mountain or moorland ultra over 100 miles or completion of a Montane Spine Challenger event, with alternative relevant events considered.
The entry fee is £1,345. A deposit of £600 secures a place and the remaining £745 is due 100 days before the race. Payments are accepted online by debit or credit card. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
