The Montane Winter Spine is a non-stop, 268-mile race along the Pennine Way from Edale, Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. The race has a time limit of 168 hours. The route crosses the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall and the Cheviots, with a total ascent of 10,732 metres and total descent of 10,941 metres. Conditions, services and entry requirements

Runners may experience winter conditions including deep snow, high winds and heavy rain. Published temperature ranges for January are daytime 0°C to 10°C and night-time -10°C to 2°C, with about eight hours of daylight. Checkpoints provide hot meals and drinks, sleeping areas, medical support, resupply bag handling, weather updates and volunteer assistance; toilets and showers are available at Hawes, Alston and Bellingham. The race is classified as unsupported, but participants may use cafes and pubs on route; pacing, planned external support and following by a private support vehicle are not permitted. Entry requires participants to be aged 21 or over and to meet experience criteria, such as completing a mountain, hill or moorland ultra over 100 miles or a Montane Spine Challenger event.
