Moel Eilio

Moel Eilio is a fell race of approximately 12.8 km (8 miles) with about 915 m (3002 ft) of climb, based in Llanberis. The event route begins near a care home at grid reference 575 600 and finishes at Llanberis Youth Hostel. Registration takes place at The Heights Hotel on Llanberis High Street where toilets are available; there are no showers. The registration point is about half a mile from the start and the route to the start is signed. There is parking in and around Llanberis.

The course starts with a steep climb on tarmac for roughly 1 kilometre, then follows a bridal path and a gate onto open hillside. Canes mark the line across heather toward the main track up Moel Eilio. Runners keep a fence to their right to reach a stile before the summit. The ridge includes the summits of Foel Gron and Foel Goch on grassy ground. The descent to the valley head can be difficult in poor weather; when visibility is low the fence line is recommended as a route marker. The climb to Moel Cynghorion is longer than it may appear and visibility issues are again managed by following the fence. A new fence may affect descent lines; high-visibility markers indicate where to rejoin the path down Maescwm. The final section descends Maes Cwm to a steep tarmac finish.

Safety notes: local knowledge is beneficial and navigational skills are required. Required kit varies with weather; full body cover, map, compass and whistle are listed and fluids are advised in hot conditions as there are no water stations. Minimum age is over 18. Entry fees were listed as £8 pre-entry or £10 on the day. Male record 58:36 (1993). Female record 72:44 (1996). Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
