The event is a trail ultramarathon held in the Mines of Spain Recreation Area and Louis Murphy Park in Dubuque, Iowa. Two race distances follow a marked loop of about twenty miles that starts and finishes at Louis Murphy Park and spends most miles on dirt, grass, and rock trails in the Mines of Spain Recreation Area.
The course uses an expansive network of trails with short stretches of pavement to connect segments. Runners pass overlooks of the Mississippi River, traverse around Horseshoe Bluff, and move through grass prairies and hardwood forests. Trail surfaces vary from steep and technical to flat single track and rolling grassy sections. Elevation gain is approximately 2,800 feet per loop.

- 100 Miler 5 loops, approximately 14,000 feet total elevation gain
- 100K 3 loops, approximately 8,400 feet total elevation gain
Time limits are enforced: the 100 mile race has a 33 hour limit and the 100 kilometer race has a 23 hour limit. Packet pickup and prerace gatherings are scheduled the day before the race and on race morning; park access rules apply before the morning pickup. The event maintains a waitlist when capacity is reached. Partial refunds and deferrals are available under specified deadlines and conditions, and bib transfers are not allowed.
