Mines Of Spain Trail Races
Dubuque, United States • 8 Aug 2026
Event Details
The Mines of Spain Trail Races take place on August 8, 2026, at the EB Lyons Nature Center in Dubuque, Iowa. The event offers three trail running distances: a 4-mile race, a 7-mile race, and a half marathon. A free Mini-Mines Trail Race for children aged 12 and under will be held on Friday evening.
Course and Terrain
The courses run through the Mines of Spain recreation area on dirt single track, double track, and wide prairie grass trails. The terrain includes rocky, technical sections and steep climbs, as well as smooth, runnable sections with rolling hills. Routes pass through hardwood forests, tall grass prairies, and along bluffs with views of the Mississippi River.
Aid and Sustainability
Aid stations provide water and Tailwind Nutrition drink, along with basic snacks. The race is cup-free; runners are encouraged to carry their own hydration. The event aims to be environmentally friendly with a zero-waste approach, including local food and beer. A shuttle service from a nearby hotel will be available on race morning to reduce parking congestion.
Registration and Policies
Registration is online only, with no paper forms or race-day registration. A waitlist system is in place if the event reaches capacity. A deferral policy allows runners to defer their entry to the following year if notified by July 15th. Distance switching is permitted until the Thursday or Friday before the race, depending on the direction of the switch. Bib transfers and refunds are not allowed.
Awards and Charitable Impact
Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers in each distance. Age group awards are also presented. Proceeds from the race benefit the Friends of the Mines of Spain to support trail maintenance, education, and conservation efforts at the park.
