Mearley Clough Fell Race
The Mearley Clough Fell Race is a Category AS event organized by Clayton-le-Moors Harriers. The course covers a distance of 3.5 miles with a total ascent of 1247 ft. It is held under UKA rules and is registered with the FRA. The race starts and finishes near The Calf’s Head in Worston, close to Clitheroe.
The route is partially marked and begins with a short road stretch before transitioning into fields. Runners follow a flattish section toward a farm track at Little Mearley Farm, then proceed through a wooded area and over a stile into a rough field. The course involves crossing a brook and reaching a fell gate before ascending the "Big Dipper," a steep rocky climb leading to the Scout cairn. A cut-off time of one hour is enforced at the Scout cairn. The descent from the top is steep and well-flagged, returning runners via the same route to the finish line located in the field next to Worston House.
Registration takes place at The Calf’s Head pub or its gardens. Participants must be at least 14 years old on race day, and those under 18 require parental consent. Entry fees include a pasta supper at the venue following the event. Vouchers are awarded to top finishers across various age categories, including Under 23, V40, V50, V60, V70, and MV80. Spot prizes are also available for those present at the presentation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
