Marlborough Downs Challenge

The Marlborough Downs Challenge is a trail running event held in the North Wessex Downs. This event focuses on off-road running, utilizing scenic tracks and footpaths across the Wiltshire countryside. The race is licensed by the Trail Running Association (TRA) and is conducted under UK Athletics rules.

Participants can select from two available distances:

  • 33 miles (approximate)
  • 20 miles (approximate)

The 33 mile ultramarathon involves approximately 3000 feet of elevation gain, while the 20 mile course includes roughly 1500 feet of elevation. Age requirements apply for both events; runners for the shorter course must be at least 18 years old, while the longer course requires entrants to be 20 years or older on the day of the race.

The routes traverse significant local landmarks and trails, including the Wansdyke Path, Tan Hill Way, White Horse Trail, and Mid Wilts Way. Featured locations include the Vale of Pewsey, West Woods, and the high points of Knapp Hill and Tan Hill. The longer route also encompasses the Kennet & Avon Canal into Devizes, Roundway Hill, and the Cherhill Monument. Both courses eventually converge to pass through Avebury, known for its prehistoric stone circle and views of Silbury Hill. The event concludes at the Marlborough Leisure Centre, where facilities for showers and refreshments are available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
