Marlborough Downs Challenge
The Marlborough Downs Challenge is a set of off road trail races across the North Wessex Downs. The event offers two distance options and follows mostly tracks and footpaths through varied Wiltshire countryside. Distances are approximate.
- 33 mile Ultramarathon Trail Race
- 20 mile Trail Race
Both routes run along sections of established long distance paths including the Wansdyke Path, Tan Hill Way, White Horse Trail and the Mid Wilts Way, with views across the Vale of Pewsey. The courses pass through West Woods and Gopher Wood, and include two of Wiltshire’s higher points at Knapp Hill and Tan Hill. The longer route continues via the Kennet and Avon Canal into Devizes and then visits Roundway Hill and Morgan's Hill before rejoining the shorter course.
After the routes rejoin the course goes through Avebury with its prehistoric stone circle and views of Silbury Hill, then continues via Overton and Fyfield Downs back to Marlborough Leisure Centre where showers and refreshments are available. Elevation is approximately 3000 feet for the 33 mile course and approximately 1500 feet for the 20 mile course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
