Maldon Ultras

Maldon Ultras is a lapped ultramarathon held over a 10.15 mile loop near Maldon. The route is 95% off road and follows footpaths through fields, woodland and a disused railway line, passes vineyards and offers views across Maldon to the Blackwater estuary. The loop is undulating but contains no major climbs.

Three race options are offered:

  • M100: 101.5 miles, 10 laps, 6470 ft elevation
  • M50: 50.75 miles, 5 laps, 3275 ft elevation
  • M30: 30.45 miles, 3 laps, 1941 ft elevation

All events are chip timed and have official cut-off limits: 32-hour for the 100-mile, 16-hour for the 50-mile, and 9-hour for the 30-mile. Checkpoints include a halfway point with basic refreshments and toilets, and a start/finish checkpoint with a broader selection of snacks and drinks; later in the day there will also be hot food options. The halfway checkpoint closes during the event and some competitors must pass it before that closure.

Only 100-mile runners may be accompanied by a support runner, and then only on the final two laps; support runners must not carry mandatory kit. Runners may retire only at a checkpoint or the start/finish; in emergencies organisers will dispatch assistance.

Minimum age is over 20. Entry places and costs: 75 places each; M100 £120, M50 £70, M30 £45.

Mandatory kit must be carried at all times. For M100 and M50 this includes at least 1 litre of liquid in a refillable container, a reusable cup, a hooded waterproof jacket with taped seams, a basic first aid kit, a head torch with spare batteries plus a rear red light, a mobile phone and power bank, and emergency food equivalent to two flapjacks. The M30 kit list is similar but does not require a head torch or rear red light. Organisers advise downloading the What3Words app for emergency location assistance. Missing mandatory kit may lead to disqualification. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
