Machlud Sunset Trail Race

Machlud Sunset Trail Race

Machlud is a planned half marathon trail race that follows tracks and paths across the Clwydian Hills, running above the Vale of Clwyd and onto the Offa’s Dyke footpath to the summit of Moel Famau. The route covers just over a half marathon distance of about 21.4 km (13.3 miles) and includes approximately 750 m of ascent, with the majority of the climb occurring in the final 10 km.

The event is hosted from the village school and uses a staggered start format so many runners aim to reach the high level section near Foel Fenlli and Moel Famau around sunset, though sunset cannot be guaranteed. The course is mostly on good quality tracks and paths, with only short marshalled tarmac sections near the village. One short section on the second half is steep enough that many participants will walk.

There are three main aid checkpoints with water refills and snacks at Moel Arthur, Llangynhafal and Bwlch Penbarras, plus water at an additional checkpoint. All runners scan timing bands at six checkpoints. Canicross entries are accepted; dogs must be on leads in start and finish areas and some stiles have dog doors or need alternate handling.

Mandatory kit includes a headtorch, whistle, refillable bottle or cup, foil bivvy bag, fell or trail shoes and weatherproof top and bottoms as required. The race raises funds for Ysgol y Foel primary school. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
