Machlud Cilcain Sunset Trail Race
Machlud is a half marathon trail race that runs on and above the Vale of Clwyd and across the Clwydian Hills to the summit of Moel Famau. The course covers just over a full half marathon distance of about 21.1–21.4 km (approximately 13.1–13.3 miles) and includes about 750 m (2,500 ft) of ascent, with the majority of height gain in the final 10 km.
The route follows good quality tracks and paths, uses sections of the Offa’s Dyke footpath, and includes some tarmac when leaving and re-entering the village. The event starts and finishes at the village school and is organised from the school hall and field. Starts are staggered so many runners reach the high level section near Foel Fenlli and Moel Famau around sunset. Canicross entries are accepted; dogs must be on leads in the start and finish area and owners should assess suitability for their animal because the route includes several stiles.
There are three main aid checkpoints named in the course plan: CP1 Moel Arthur, CP3 Llangynhafal and CP5 Bwlch Penbarras, with water also available at CP4. All competitors scan timing bands at six checkpoints. Onsite facilities include a kit dump, toilets, parking in a signed field a short walk from Race HQ, drinks and post race hot soup or stew with bread, and options for vegan and gluten free food. Registration and entries are handled online via an entry platform; the race has a limit of 120 entrants and a minimum age of 17.
Mandatory kit includes a charged headtorch, whistle, refillable drinks bottle or collapsible cup, a foil bivvy bag and fell or trail running shoes; waterproof clothing may also be required. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
