LATR Backyard Ultra

LATR Backyard Ultra : Lake Ahquabi, Indianola IA

LATR Backyard Ultra is a loop endurance event held at Lake Ahquabi State Park in Indianola, Iowa. The format requires runners to complete a 4.167 mile lap every hour; reaching 24 laps equals 100 miles. There is no preset race cap or finishing distance. The winner is the last runner to complete one more lap than any other competitor; all other participants receive a result recorded as distance covered or laps completed.

The course begins and ends at the beach shelter house and follows the Lake Trail counter clockwise around the lake. Trail surfaces are mostly dirt with some gravel and include roots, rocks, and uneven sections under mature timber with lake views. Runners continuing after dark must carry a headlamp; additional lighting will be placed on the course for overnight laps. Water, Tailwind, and snacks will be available at the starting corral and at an aid station near mid-loop. Several restrooms are located along the course and at the beach shelter house.

Crew areas are located in and around the beach shelter with tent or canopy space; vehicles must be parked in adjacent lots, there is limited electricity, and crews must remove trash and avoid loud music. Camping and hotels are available in the area. Registration has tiered pricing with increases on April 1 and September 1; t shirt add on is available for a fee prior to the September price increase.
