Event overview

The Lakeland Trails event in Coniston offers trail races over 42 km, 21 km and 10 km on a fully marked and marshalled route around Coniston Water. The course passes Tarn Hows and Beacon Tarn and runs along trails on the edge of Grisedale Forest. The route gives views of the surrounding peaks named Old Man, Swirl How, Wetherlam and Dow Crags. The event village is based at Coniston Sports and Social Centre and includes food and drink stalls, a bar, seating, live music and race commentary.

All courses use footpaths and bridleways with mainly hard-packed trail and some muddy sections. Water and feed stations are provided; competitors are asked to carry their own water or bring a reusable cup because cups are not supplied at the stations. Water and feed station locations include 8.8k and 15.5k on the half, and 8.8k, 15.5k, 16.5k, 28.9k and 34.8k on the marathon. Gates on private land must be closed after use and dogs are not allowed on course. In-ear and over-ear headphones are prohibited; bone-conductor devices are permitted.

Logistics, safety and prizes

Parking is charged (car and van fees apply) with free parking for vehicles carrying four or more occupants. Medical cover and radio communications are provided. All marathon finishers receive a medal. Prizes are awarded in open and veteran categories, with veteran age bands listed from V40 to V80. Beyond the Lune Winter Editions on 20 December offers 5, 10 and 20 km trail runs from Royal Barn in Kirkby Lonsdale with riverside sections and Lune Valley views. Longer routes need self navigation and the event is listed as full.

Take on a classic Lake District fell around Latrigg on a flagged 8 km / 5 miles course with 460 m of climb and stunning views. Starts and finishes at Fitz Park Pavilion, Keswick, and pre entry via SiEntries is required.

Take on Orrest Sun Up in Windermere on Sun 21 Dec 2025, a bracing one mile climb to Orrest Head with stunning Lake District views. Entry on the day from The Phoenix Centre is £5 with donations supporting local community charities.
