Event Overview

The Lakeland Trails Marathon event takes place in Coniston. It offers three trail running distances: a Marathon (42 km), a Half Marathon (21 km), and a Mini Marathon (10 km). The event uses the Coniston Sports and Social Centre as its base, which has a bar and seating for spectators.

Courses

The Marathon course is a circuit around Coniston Water. It passes the beauty spots of Tarn Hows and Beacon Tarn, offering views of the surrounding fells. The Half Marathon uses the first section of the marathon route to Tarn Hows before returning. The 10k route also includes Tarn Hows. All courses are on footpaths and bridleways, with varied terrain including hard-packed trails and occasional muddy sections.

Venue and Atmosphere

The event village has a festival atmosphere. There is live music, race commentary, and food and drink stalls. A professional race photographer takes photos. After the runs, there is live music and a prize-giving ceremony. A free children's fun trail is also held.

Logistics and Rules

Parking is available on-site for a fee, with free parking for cars carrying four or more people. The area is accessible by public bus from Ambleside. Participants must collect their race number before their start. On-course water stations provide water and snacks, but runners are asked to bring their own reusable cup. Classic Lake District fell run from New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, a sharp 3.5 mile course with 2100 ft of climbing over rough rock and moor. Day entries welcome; bring map, compass and waterproofs for this high country test.

Experience a 10 km multi-terrain race through undulating roads and Setmurthy Woods starting from Cockermouth School. All finishers receive an Easter Egg and can enjoy professional chip timing on this scenic course.

Experience an evening fell race in Ambleside featuring 6.4 km of flagged trails and 330 metres of ascent. This scenic out and back route climbs from Rothay Park to the Loughrigg summit for a classic Lake District running experience.

Experience the landscape of the Lake District with trail races of 23 km and 53 km starting from Keswick. These chip timed events include themed medals and routes passing Derwent Water and Scafell Pike.
