Lakeland Trails Helvellyn

Event Overview

The Lakeland Trails at Helvellyn is a trail running event on October 31, 2026. It starts and finishes on the shores of Ullswater in Glenridding, within the Lake District National Park. The courses pass through ancient woodlands and the foothills of Helvellyn, offering panoramic views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells.

Distances

Four events are offered:

• Helvellyn Sport Trail: A 5 km distance for participants aged 12 and over. There is no time limit.
• Helvellyn Trail Run: A 10 km distance for participants aged 16 and over, with a 2-hour time limit.
• Helvellyn Trail Challenge: A 15 km distance for participants aged 18 and over, intended for less competitive runners and fitness walkers. It has a 3.5-hour time limit.
• Helvellyn Trail Race: A 15 km distance for competitive runners aged 18 and over, with a 2-hour time limit. Prizes for the 15 km are only awarded to participants in this Race start.

Course and Logistics

All courses are well-marked and marshalled, using footpaths and bridleways. Underfoot conditions are described as generally good for off-road running but can be tricky in places. Participants must carry their own water, as there are no water stations on the courses. A kit list including a hat, gloves, and waterproof jacket may be made compulsory in poor weather.

Parking is available at King George V Playing Fields for a fee, paid in cash. Due to road closures and limited space, complimentary shuttle buses from Penrith to Glenridding are provided for participants in the afternoon 15 km events.

Event Day Information

Registration opens at 9:00 AM on the event day. Start times are scheduled throughout the day. After the runs, there will be live music and a prize-giving ceremony.
