Lakeland Trails at Helvellyn

Lakeland Trails at Helvellyn is a set of marked and marshalled trail events that start and finish at Jenkins Field on the shore of Ullswater in Glenridding. The routes use footpaths and bridleways into the foothills of Helvellyn and pass through ancient woodlands with elevated views of Ullswater and surrounding peaks. Underfoot conditions are generally good for those used to off road running but can be tricky in places.

Distances

  • 5k
  • 10k
  • 15k (Race and Challenge)

The organisers set minimum ages and time limits for each distance: the 5k requires entrants to be at least 12 and has no time limit; the 10k requires entrants to be at least 16 and has a 2 hour limit; both 15k options require entrants to be at least 18, with the Race carrying a 2 hour limit and the Challenge a 3.5 hour limit. Prizes for the 15k are only awarded to competitors in the Race start.

Practical information includes on site registration with race numbers to be collected on the day at least 45 minutes before the allocated start, baggage storage beside the main marquee, and no water stations on course so competitors must carry their own water and cup. Shuttle buses from Penrith are arranged for the 15k events in adverse conditions. Recommended or compulsory kit in poor weather can include a hat, gloves, waterproof jacket and over-trousers or running tights. Medics and marshals provide event safety, and dogs are not permitted on the courses. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
