Lakeland Trails Helvellyn

Lakeland Trails Helvellyn is a series of trail events based at Jenkins Field in Glenridding on the shores of Ullswater in the Lake District. Courses follow well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways into the foothills of Helvellyn, offering elevated panoramic views of Ullswater and surrounding peaks. Underfoot conditions are mainly good for off road running but can be tricky in places.

Distances offered include:

  • 5 km Helvellyn Sport Trail
  • 10 km Helvellyn Trail Run
  • 15 km Helvellyn Trail Race
  • 15 km Helvellyn Trail Challenge

Course and entry details note age and time restrictions. The 5 km requires entrants to be at least 12 years old and has no time limit. The 10 km requires entrants to be at least 16 years old and has a two hour limit. Both 15 km events require entrants to be at least 18 years old; the Challenge has a three and a half hour limit while the Race has a two hour limit. All courses are marshalled and signed.

Logistics include limited parking in Glenridding with a main cash only car park, complimentary shuttle buses arranged from Penrith for afternoon 15 km events when required, baggage storage by the main marquee, on site medical cover and an event village with kit retailers and food stalls. Runners must carry their own water and cup as there are no water stations on course. In ear headphones are not permitted and dogs are not allowed on the course. OMM Lite in Grasmere is a map based navigation event over one or two days where solo runners or teams locate numbered checkpoints to score points, with timing chips, live tracking, bespoke maps and a post event hot meal included.

Two category A fell races around the head of the Duddon Valley presenting long and short mountain courses with significant ascent. Strong navigation skills and full mountain kit are required.

A 10 mile fell race in the Lake District with about 3000 feet of climb over Dow and Caw. It is a category A event that requires navigational skill, proper kit and experience on rough mountain terrain.

A weekend of off-road running in Grasmere featuring the OMM Lite Trail Quest, the Grasmere 24 hour ultra and a range of trail races, family events, camping, parking and workshops.
