Lake District Mountain Trial

The Lake District Mountain Trial is an annual mountain navigation event held in mid September across venues in the Lake District. It is a classic mountain navigation race on rough, mountainous terrain run under Fell Runners Association rules. Courses test route choice, navigational skill and stamina.

Recent and planned events include the 70th Trial on Sunday 14 September 2025 at Side Farm, Patterdale (nearest postcode CA11 0NL) and the scheduled date of Sunday 13 September 2026.

Distances and formats

  • Classic: about 25 miles with 8000 feet ascent and descent
  • Medium: about three quarters of the Classic distance
  • Short: about half the Classic distance, includes a Pairs category

Entry and equipment The standard entry fee is £30.00 with a £1-50 discount if competitors use their own SI card. Competitors under 23 on the day pay £5.00 and may receive a free loan SI card. Pre-marked waterproof maps are included in the entry fee. Electronic punching and scoring use the SportIdent system and results are provided on the spot. Post-race food and an informal get together are included in the entry fee. Wide range of prizes are awarded.

Eligibility and safety Applicants are vetted for fell-running experience. Minimum age for single runners is 18. Over 14s may compete as part of a pair on the Short course if the accompanying runner is at least 21. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.

A 55 km self-sufficient ultra across the Yorkshire Dales following Wainwright’s coast to coast from Kirkby Stephen to Richmond, with mapped GPX/Avenza support, mandatory kit checks and staffed aid stations including the Dales Bike Centre.

Explore the scenic forest tracks of Whinlatter Top with 9 km or 12 km trail runs. This chip timed event offers wide runnable paths and is open to runners with or without dogs.

Classic Lake District fell run from New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, a sharp 3.5 mile course with 2100 ft of climbing over rough rock and moor. Day entries welcome; bring map, compass and waterproofs for this high country test.

Experience a 10 km multi-terrain race through undulating roads and Setmurthy Woods starting from Cockermouth School. All finishers receive an Easter Egg and can enjoy professional chip timing on this scenic course.
