Lake District Mountain Trial

Patterdale, United Kingdom • 14 Sep 2025

The La Sportiva Lake District Mountain Trial is a premier fell-running event held at Side Farm, Patterdale in the Lake District. It offers Classic (about 29 km/7,500 ft ascent), Medium (21 km/5,000 ft), and Short (15 km/3,500 ft) courses, designed to test mountaineering ability, stamina and fast, safe traverse of rugged, often dangerous terrain. Run on orienteering principles, the trial emphasizes navigation and route choice as much as speed; entrants are vetted for experience. It’s the longest-established event of its kind in Britain, evolving from a YHA race in 1952, and organized by the Lake District Mountain Trial Association. Features include hot food, map and dibber hire, with a Short course offering a pairs option. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
