Riverway Insomnia

Riverway Insomnia is a backyard ultra held at the Riverway Precinct in Townsville and organised by the Townsville Triathlon Club. The event runs two timed formats where laps start on the hour each hour and participants choose how far they go.

Distances available:

  • 100 km Insomnia 100 Ultra, 24 hours, 4.2 km lap each hour, solo or team.
  • 42 km Insomnia 42 Marathon, 10 hours, 4.2 km lap each hour, solo or team.

The course is a 4.2 km loop with laps alternating direction each hour and a mid-lap timing checkpoint at Turtle Bridge to validate laps. At the hour a start bell sounds and runners have two minutes to cross the start line; failure to start or complete the next lap is recorded as DNF. Teams of two to four may alternate runners on any lap provided someone starts on the hour. Winners are determined by lowest aggregated time across completed laps in each format.

Race bibs must be worn on every lap; loss of a bib results in DNF for subsequent laps. A race belt is recommended and is available at registration for a fee. Emergency contact details are verified at registration. Physio support is provided at scheduled intervals and live lap results are posted at the event portal.

Participants are advised to carry a headlamp with spare batteries, a race belt, phone and charger, food and fluids, extra layers and sun protection. The recovery area is fenced and encourages temporary shelters; there is no event power and a leave no trace policy applies. No swimming in the lagoon under the event permit.
