Independence Day Classic 42nd Anniversary
The Independence Day Classic held in Newhall provides a selection of paved, flat courses through local streets. This annual event raises funds for cross-country programs at seven regional high schools and various local non-profit organizations. The race routes utilize Dalbey Drive and sections of the City of Santa Clarita parade route, offering a environment with crowds of spectators.
Available distances and categories include:
- 5K Run/Walk: A fast, flat course with a water station and a turnaround point near the local library.
- 1K Kid K: An out-and-back route starting on Dalbey Drive for younger participants.
- 1 Mile Masters Walk: A flat out-and-back course designed for senior participants that follows the parade route on Orchard Village Road.
The event features a post-race expo in the park with approximately 10 vendors. Participants in the 5K and Senior Walk receive a technical micro-fiber shirt and a finisher's medal, while those in the Kids K receive a medal. All participants have access to free Kona Ice at the expo and can download digital event photos after the race.
Participants using strollers are permitted but must start at the back of the group. Bicycles and dogs are not allowed on the course. Award ceremonies for overall winners and teams take place at the expo, while age-group awards for the 5K are based on chip timing for various brackets ranging from 12 and under to 70 and over.
