Tough Mugu is a trail running event held on July 18, 2026, at La Jolla Group Campground in Point Mugu State Park, Malibu, California. It is race number 2 of the Bulldog Challenge Series. The event offers chip timing, same-day results, finisher medals, and a race shirt for participants. A podium prize purse of $2,000 is awarded, with cash prizes for the top three overall finishers. The 25k overall winners also earn complimentary entries to a season final event with an additional prize purse.
Courses
The event features two distances:
- 25k - 15.75 miles with 2,427 feet of vertical gain and a 3.5-hour time limit
- 10k - 6.2 miles with 1,164 feet of vertical gain and a 3-hour time limit
The 25k course follows the Ray Miller Trail from sea level into coastal mountain fire roads, valleys, and single track, includes a bypass around Mugu Peak with views of the Channel Islands, and returns via switchbacks. Aid stations are located at multiple mile points on the 25k course, including a water-only station at Chumash. The 10k course shares parts of the same trail and has an aid station near mile 3.1.
Logistics and services
The venue is La Jolla Canyon in Point Mugu State Park. Parking is free on Pacific Coast Highway with on-road parking near Thornhill Broom Campground; participants are asked to keep all wheels off the road and follow posted signs and volunteer directions. Aid stations use Skratch Labs hydration. Post-race services include breakfast options, a beer garden for 21+, sports massages, and event medical support.
