HOWL Trail - Heart Of Wales Line event

The HOWL Trail takes place on 29 May 2027 and uses the final sections of the Heart of Wales Line trail, a waymarked route that runs from Llanelli to Craven Arms. The event finishes at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms, Shropshire; parking is available at the centre with a £5 charge that supports the centre.

Three race distances are offered:

  • 50 miles
  • 26 miles
  • 16 miles

Each distance has its own registration location: Llandrindod Wells for the 50 mile course, Knucklass for the 26 mile course, and Bucknell for the 16 mile course. A baggage drop at each registration point will transport participants' bags to the finish. The Heart of Wales Line train is an available travel option to reach start locations; organisers suggest parking at the Discovery Centre and walking about half a mile to Craven Arms station to catch the train.

Checkpoint arrangements differ by course. The 50 mile route has two manned checkpoints at Llanbister Rd railway halt (around 15 miles) and Bucknell Primary School (around 19 miles). The 26 mile route has one manned checkpoint at Bucknell (around 8 miles). The 16 mile route has no manned checkpoints between Bucknell and Craven Arms.

Entry opens 1 June 2026 and closes 22 May 2027. Entry fees are £95 for the 50 mile, £75 for the 26 mile, and £55 for the 16 mile course. An option to purchase event cover (XCover) is available. Age limits vary by course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
