Hoof It on the Hill

Hoof It on the Hill is a fundraising trail race in Cherry Creek, New York, supporting the Chautauqua County Equestrian Trail System (CCETS). The event is in its fifth year and uses portions of horse trails, the Earl Cardot Eastside Overland Trail, snowmobile trail and some forest roads. The course passes through pine and hardwood forests, meadows, across creeks and streams, and includes several steep hills. Expect wet and muddy conditions in places and a mix of single track technical trail, double track or snowmobile trail, and sections of forest road. The 26k also serves as the loop for the 52k, which is completed twice; the 26k and 52k include a short stretch of asphalt.

Distances and elevation gain:

  • 52k, ~2600 ft elevation gain
  • 26k, ~1300 ft elevation gain
  • 12k, ~630 ft elevation gain
  • 6k, ~300 ft elevation gain

Aid and support vary by distance. There are no aid stations for the 6k, one water stop for the 12k, and two aid stations plus two water stops on the 26k loop; aid is available at the start/finish for two-loop runners. Crews are allowed at the Ruttenbur start/finish and at the Boutwell Hill aid station for 26k and 52k runners; drop bags are allowed at Boutwell Hill. No pacers are permitted. The event notes a generous cutoff and welcomes hikers in all distances. Awards, swag and entry rules are set by the organizer, including no same day registration and specific refund and deferral policies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
