Event Information
Hoof It on the Hill is a trail running event in Boutwell Hill State Forest, near Cherry Creek, New York. The event is a fundraiser for the Chautauqua County Equestrian Trail System (CCETS), a volunteer-maintained network of multi-use trails.
Course Details
The course uses a mix of horse trails, the Earl Cardot Eastside Overland Trail, snowmobile trails, and some forest roads. The terrain includes pine and hardwood forests, meadows, creeks, streams, and steep hills. Runners can expect wet and muddy conditions. The route features sections of forest road, single-track technical trail, and double-track trail. Distances offered are 6k, 12k, 26k, and 52k. The 52k race consists of two laps of the 26k loop. Both the 26k and 52k distances include a short stretch of asphalt road.
Race Support
Aid stations are provided based on distance:
- The 6k has no aid stations.
- The 12k has one water stop.
- The 26k loop has two aid stations and two water stops.
- The 52k has access to the start/finish area aid station between loops. Aid stations provide water, sports drink, and typical ultra foods like sandwiches, candy, pretzels, pickles, cookies, fruit, and chips. Crews are allowed only at the Start/Finish area and the Boutwell Hill Aid Station (for 26k and 52k runners). Drop bags are permitted at the Boutwell Hill Aid Station for 26k and 52k distances. Pacers are not permitted.
Logistics
Packet and swag pickup begins at 6:00 AM on race day. All finishers receive an award. Awards for the first man and woman in each distance are presented at the finish line. Registered entrants before April 23rd will receive a performance shirt at check-in; availability is not guaranteed after this date. There is no same-day registration. The event welcomes hikers in all distances and has a generous overall cutoff time. It is Trail Sisters Approved.
Policies
The event has a strict no-refund policy. If a runner cancels or does not show, the fee is considered a donation to CCETS. If the race director must cancel the event, all entries will be deferred to the following year. A pregnancy deferral policy is available for requests made by April 1st.
