Hood & Portland To Coast Relay
The Providence Hood & Portland To Coast Relay brings teams from across the United States and around the world to run or walk across Oregon terrain from the top of Mount Hood to beaches on the Pacific Ocean. The event draws participants from over 40 countries and all 50 states and has filled its team limit for many years.
Teams consist of 8 to 12 members who share sequential running or walking legs and typically travel with two support vans. Distances noted for the relays include:
- Hood to Coast 196 miles
- Portland To Coast 128 miles
The event uses numbered exchange points along the course, provides radios at every exchange, and employs bike and motorcycle safety patrols on specified legs. Safety and conduct rules require runners and walkers to carry a flashlight during night hours, wear one front and one back LED flasher, and wear a reflective vest until morning. Sleeping in undesignated exchange parking is prohibited; small tents are allowed only in designated sleeping fields except at Exchange 30. No bicycles or dogs are permitted on the course. Open alcoholic containers on course result in disqualification.
Teams are responsible for basic first aid supplies, ice, and water for hydration. There are no guaranteed aid stations, and participants are advised to plan for hydration and self care. Vehicle size limits and parking restrictions apply; violations can result in penalties or disqualification. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
