Trail Running on Dartmoor
The Hameldown Hammer is a trail running event based in the village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. The course is situated at the foot of the Hameldown massif and traverses iconic granite tors and forest glades. The terrain consists of 98% trail, featuring grassy, rocky, and muddy tracks throughout the Dartmoor landscape.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- Hameldown 7EVEN: A "long 10k" with over 450 meters of total ascent, featuring a double climb of the Hameldown ridge.
- Hammer Half Marathon: A half marathon distance with a total ascent of over 800 meters, following a clockwise route with a double ascent of the ridge.
- Sledgehammer - Hammer Ultra: A 30-mile route across the moorland that includes GPS tracking for participants.
The event follows UK Athletics guidelines under a Trail Running Association permit. The half marathon and 7EVEN courses are fully marked and marshalled. All finishers receive a bespoke medal, and event t-shirts are available for purchase.
Specific mandatory kit requirements apply to all runners, including trail shoes, a whistle, a survival blanket, a waterproof jacket, a mobile phone, and a hat and gloves. The event operates a cupless policy, requiring participants to carry a minimum of 500ml of liquid and a personal collapsible cup or bottle for use at aid stations. Ultra runners must also carry waterproof leggings and a spare long-sleeve baselayer.
Minimum age requirements are 16 for the 7EVEN, 17 for the Half Marathon, and 20 for the Ultra. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
