Trail Running and Mountain Biking in Crested Butte
The Grin & Bear It is a historic mountain competition held in Crested Butte. Originally established as a sprint to Green Lake, the event has expanded to include multiple distances and disciplines through the surrounding mountain trails. The races start and finish at the Crested Butte Nordic Center.
Participants can choose from several event categories:
- 25 km Run Loop
- 25 km Mountain Bike Race
- 15 km Run (Out and Back)
The 25 km course features approximately 2,900 feet of elevation gain and loss. The route utilizes the Baxter Gulch trailhead, climbing through aspen groves and open meadows to reach a high saddle at 10,700 feet. The trail reaches a high point of 10,983 feet on the Carbon Trail, offering views of the Elk Mountain Range before descending via the Green Lake Trail. The mountain bike category on this course involves technical terrain.
The 15 km run follows a route toward Green Lake with approximately 1,600 feet of elevation gain. This course uses singletrack and primitive double track trails, passing through timber and meadows before descending 2,100 feet from the lake back to the town area.
Course aid is limited, and all participants are required to carry at least 16 oz. of water. Hydration stations are located at specific trail intersections and near Green Lake. Instead of traditional podium ceremonies, the event features prizes for randomly selected finishers and a unique "Awkward Load" prize for the first racers to reach specific checkpoints.
