Aspen Backcountry

Aspen Backcountry is a trail running event held in Aspen, Colorado, focusing on the dirt trail networks surrounding the city. The event features high alpine terrain with elevations ranging from 7,900 feet to over 10,385 feet. Participants can choose from three distinct distances:

  • 50K: 30.39 miles with approximately 5,512 feet of elevation gain.
  • Marathon: 26.35 miles with approximately 4,764 feet of elevation gain.
  • Heavy Half-Marathon: 14.64 miles with approximately 3,169 feet of elevation gain.

The courses offer views of the Elk Mountains and include various ascents and descents. The 50K route includes an out and back section to the McNamara Hut, part of the 10th Mountain Hut System. This is a limited support race with remote aid stations providing water, electrolyte drinks, bananas, and oranges. Participants are encouraged to carry the official GPX track on a personal device for navigation.

The start and finish line is located at Rio Grande Park. All participants are required by Pitkin County to possess a valid CORSAR card or a Colorado hunting/fishing license on race day. The event coincides with the Duck Derby festival at the park, which features live music, food trucks, and family activities. Finishers receive a commemorative award, and podium awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers in each category.
