Aspen Backcountry
The Aspen Backcountry is a trail running event in Aspen, Colorado, held at Rio Grande Park and using the surrounding dirt trails. The event offers multiple race options:
- 50K
- Marathon
- Heavy Half Marathon
Courses run almost exclusively on dirt trails and feature varied terrain with sustained ascents and descents and substantial elevation gain. Key course statistics include course distances, total elevation gain and maximum elevation above 10,000 feet for the different distances.
Support on course is limited. There are remote aid stations, course markings, portable toilets and a medical team at the start and finish. Volunteer medical personnel are present at some aid stations, but there is no guarantee of rescue or on course medical attention. Runners are advised to carry navigation files such as the official GPX track for reference. Drop bags are allowed at the start and finish.
Logistics note that parking in Aspen can be challenging in summer and carpooling is recommended. A fee based parking garage is located near Rio Grande Park. Pitkin County requires a valid CORSAR card for event day access; a Colorado hunting or fishing license may serve the same purpose.
All finishers who complete their registered course receive a commemorative award. Podium awards are given to the top three male and female finishers in each distance. The event coincides with a family oriented festival at the park that includes live music, food trucks and community activities. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
