Great Hucklow Fell Race
The Great Hucklow Fell Race is a community-run fell race in the Peak District centred on Great Hucklow. The main route is around 10 km (about 6 miles) with approximately 340 m of ascent. The course crosses private land and permission to use the route applies only for the morning of the event.
The route leaves the village and descends before crossing tracks and fields, including a water splash early in the race. The course climbs to the Abney Moor trig on Durham Edge, traverses Abney Moor, drops to a small reservoir and reaches the moor high point. A fast descent leads to a road, a short tarmac section and the hidden clough into Bretton Clough where footing can be wet. Runners then navigate hillocks and climb toward Abney Grange, cross fields and follow a short tarmac and woodland section back to the finish at the school. Competitors should note possible slippery gravel on steep tarmac near the final turn.
The race has a long local history and is organised by village volunteers; over 30 people are typically needed on race day for registration, marshalling, results and refreshments. Entry fees contribute hundreds of pounds to local causes. Teams are allowed and the event holds a permit with associated UK Athletics insurance from the FRA. Renowned flapjacks are provided at the finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
