Grand Canyon of the South Ultras
The Grand Canyon of the South Ultras is an inaugural trail running event held on the Virginia side of Breaks Interstate Park. The weekend offers multiple distance options that run on the park's singletrack and mountain trails among sandstone cliffs, overlooks, and forested hollows carved into the Appalachian Mountains.
Distances include:
- 50K : tour of park trails with multiple overlooks and fully stocked aid stations
- Double 10K (20K) : complete both the Morning 10K and Sunset 10K in one day
- Morning 10K : scenic overlooks, moderate climbs, and technical but approachable trail sections
- Sunset 10K : evening course designed for canyon sunset views and cooler temperatures
The 50K course highlights ridgeline running, rocky sections, flowing singletrack, and significant elevation gain and loss. All distances share an overall cutoff time of 8 PM. The organizer is Southwest Virginia Running; race policies on registration, transfers, deferrals, refunds, participant conduct, and race-day procedures are provided by the organizer.
The event promotes a destination race experience with on-site camping, a 10% lodging discount for registered runners, on-site dining, and park amenities such as a seasonal water park, mountain lake, fishing, paddle boat and kayak rentals, playgrounds, picnic areas, and hiking trails suited for family visitors.
