Coalfields Backyard Ultra
Coalfields Backyard Ultra takes place on May 22 during Memorial Day weekend in Williamson, West Virginia, at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College (1601 Co Hwy 52/27). The event is a Lazarus Lake–sanctioned Backyard Ultra using the Last Runner Standing format.
Competitors run a measured out-and-back loop of 4.1667 miles (2.08 miles out, 2.08 miles back). The course follows an asphalt path along the West Williamson flood wall, passes Williamson PK-8 (a short gravel section), moves through a neighborhood and past a recreation area to a turnaround at 2.08 miles. The surface is predominantly flat asphalt; the course will be marked with cones, arrows, and other markers. If a section becomes saturated by rain, organizers will redirect runners to the other side of a guardrail while maintaining the same flow.
There is a single aid station at the start/finish that supplies water, hydration drinks, food and porta potties. No personal aid is allowed on the course; competitors return to the start/finish between loops and may use their own supplies there. Camping is allowed at the start/finish; a camping fee of $10 per day applies and participants may set up the day before the event.
Organizers will provide timing and live results with a video feed, and the event is in the process of obtaining Bronze status for 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
