The Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Lazarus Lake sanctioned Last Runner Standing event held on May 28, 2027, at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College in Williamson, WV. The race is organized by Tug Valley Road Runners and is presented as the fifth edition of the event in West Virginia.
The format requires competitors to complete repeated loops, with each loop starting exactly one hour after the previous start. The course is a measured out-and-back loop of 4.1667 miles (2.08 miles out and 2.08 miles back), equivalent to about 6.7056 kilometers. The route follows asphalt paths along the West Williamson flood wall river path, passes a school and neighborhood streets, and uses a turnaround at roughly 2.08 miles. The course is described as very flat and will be marked with cones, arrows, and other markers. One section may be rerouted if heavy saturation occurs.
There is a single common aid station at the start and finish area providing water, hydration, and food. Porta potties will be available and the campus tech building will be open for restrooms and food. Personal aid during a loop is not allowed; participants may use their own supplies at the start/finish area and may set up camping or crew stations on site. Participants and crew may set up the day before the event.
Timing support will be provided by Brunning Endurance Timing with an updated screen and live results and live video feed. The event is in the process of obtaining Bronze status for 2027. Registration is offered in tiered pricing with fees that range from approximately USD 130 to USD 180 and registration closes prior to the event.
