Coalfields Backyard Ultra

Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Backyard Ultra format race held on Memorial Day weekend in Williamson, West Virginia. The event takes place at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College and follows the Last Runner Standing format. The race date is May 22, 2026 and the event is pursuing Bronze status for 2026.

The measured loop is 4.1667 miles total, consisting of approximately 2.08 miles out and 2.08 miles back. The course runs from the college parking area onto an asphalt path along the West Williamson flood wall, passes Williamson PK-8 (a short gravel section), continues through a neighborhood and past a recreation area to a turnaround at 2.08 miles. The surface is mostly asphalt and the loop will be marked with cones, arrows, and other markers. One section can become saturated in heavy rain and may be temporarily rerouted across the guardrail.

Logistics include a single aid station at the start/finish with water, hydration, food options, and porta potties. Participants may keep personal supplies and camp at the start/finish area; a camping fee of $10 per day applies. A timing company will provide timing, a live results feed, and live video. The race follows standard Backyard Ultra rules: each loop begins on the hour, must be completed within the hour, and warnings and countdowns are given before each start.
