Coalfields Backyard Ultra
Coalfields Backyard Ultra in Williamson, West Virginia is a Last Runner Standing backyard ultra scheduled for May 28, 2027. The event is organized by Tug Valley Road Runners and is sanctioned through the Backyard Ultra series.
The measured course is an out-and-back loop of 4.1667 miles total, with a turnaround approximately 2.08 miles from the start. The loop runs from the Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College onto an asphalt path along the West Williamson flood wall, passes Williamson PK-8 on a gravel section, goes through a neighborhood and a recreation area, and returns to the start/finish. The course is described as very flat and will be marked with cones and directional arrows. One section may be redirected if the path becomes saturated by heavy rain.
Race format follows backyard ultra rules: each loop begins on the hour, each loop must be completed within an hour to count, no personal aid is allowed on the course, and no artificial aids such as trekking poles are permitted. The winner is the last runner to complete a loop; others are recorded with their distance covered.
Facilities and services include one aid station at the start/finish with water, hydration drinks, food options, and porta potties. Participants may set up camp at the start/finish area and crews may provide aid there. Timing, live results, and live video feed will be provided. The event is in the process of obtaining Bronze status for 2027.
Pricing tiers are listed by registration date with fees ranging from $130 to $180 depending on when registration occurs. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
