Coalfields Backyard Ultra
Coalfields Backyard Ultra is scheduled for May 28, 2027 in Williamson, West Virginia, at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. The event is organized by Tug Valley Road Runners and follows the Last Runner Standing backyard ultra format.
The measured loop is 4.1667 miles total (2.08 miles out and 2.08 miles back), metric equivalent 6.7056 km. The course runs on asphalt along the West Williamson flood wall river path, passes a PK-8 school on a gravel section, continues through a neighborhood and past a recreation area to a turnaround at 2.08 miles. The surface is described as very flat and the route will be marked with cones, directional arrows, and other markers. A single aid station will be located at the start/finish area. Organizers will provide water, hydration, food options from local vendors, porta potties, and access to a tech building restrooms. Participants may keep personal aid and supplies at the start/finish and may set up camp there for rest between loops.
The event follows standard backyard ultra rules: each loop must be completed within the hour to count, no personal aid on course, no non-competitors on course, and the race is open ended until a lone finisher completes an additional loop. Timing and live results will be provided along with a live video feed. Organizers are seeking Bronze status for 2027. Registration fees vary by date, with earlier prices lower and higher fees closer to the event; registration closes on May 27, 2027 at 11:59 PM ET.
