About the race
The Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing backyard ultra held in Williamson, West Virginia at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. This is the fifth edition and is presented as West Virginia's only backyard ultra. The event is sanctioned through the Backyard Ultra format.
The measured course is an out and back loop of 4.1667 miles (2.08 miles each way). The route follows an asphalt path along the West Williamson flood wall, passes Williamson PK-8 school on a gravel road, runs through a neighborhood, and reaches a turnaround near a recreation area. The course is described as very flat and will be marked with cones, directional arrows, and other markers. One section can become saturated in heavy rain; in that case the course may be redirected to the other side of the guardrail.
The event follows standard backyard ultra rules: each loop must be completed within one hour, loops start precisely one hour after the previous start, bell warnings are given before each loop, no personal aid is allowed on the course, and the last person to complete a loop is the winner. Organizers provide a single aid station at the start/finish with water, hydration, food, and porta potties. Participants may keep their own aid and set up camp at the start/finish to rest between loops.
Timing and results will be provided by a timing company with live results and a live video feed. Organizers are seeking Bronze status for 2027. Registration tiers and fees vary by date; registration closes May 27. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
