Coalfields Backyard Ultra - May 28, 2027

Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing event held in Williamson, West Virginia, at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College (1601 Co Hwy 52/27). The race is part of the Backyard Ultra format and is organized by Tug Valley Road Runners.

The measured course is a 4.1667 mile loop (2.08 miles out and 2.08 miles back) on mostly asphalt along the West Williamson flood wall river path. The route passes a school on a short gravel section, goes through a neighborhood division, and reaches a turnaround near a recreation area and community center. The course is described as very flat and will be marked with cones, arrows, and other markers. One section can become saturated in heavy rain; organizers may redirect runners to the other side of the guardrail in that case.

The event uses a Last Runner Standing format: loops begin on the hour and each loop must be completed within one hour to count. Common aid is allowed at the start/finish only; no personal aid on the course and no artificial aids are permitted. Organizers provide a single aid station at the start/finish with water, hydration, food, and porta potties, and the tech building will be open for restrooms and food. Participants may set up their own aid and camp at the start/finish area.

Timing and live coverage will be provided, including live results and a video feed. Organizers note they are pursuing Bronze status for 2027. Registration closes May 27, 2027; tiered entry fees apply. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
