Coalfields Backyard Ultra : Williamson, West Virginia

The Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Lazarus Lake‑sanctioned Last Runner Standing event held on Memorial Day weekend in Williamson, West Virginia. The 5th edition uses a measured out and back loop of 4.1667 miles (2.08 miles each way) on an asphalt river‑path near Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. The course is described as very flat and will be marked with cones, directional arrows, and other markers. Runners pass the West Williamson flood wall, a local school, a neighborhood, and a recreation area before returning to the turnaround.

The format follows standard backyard ultra rules: competitors must complete each loop within the hour, loops begin once per hour, and the last person to complete a loop is the winner. Most backyard ultras can last several days, so participants are expected to prepare crew and supplies. The event provides a single common aid station at the start/finish with water, hydration options, food, and porta potties; participants may keep their own aid and supplies at the start/finish area. Camping is permitted at the start/finish for rest between loops. Organizers plan live timing and video feed through a timing company and note they are pursuing Bronze status for 2027. If sections flood, the course may be temporarily redirected to the other side of the guardrail. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
