Coalfields Backyard Ultra
Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing backyard ultra held on May 28, 2027 in Williamson, West Virginia, organized by the Tug Valley Road Runners. The event uses a measured out-and-back loop of 4.1667 miles (2.08 miles out, 2.08 miles back; 6.7056 kilometers). The course runs from the Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College along the West Williamson flood wall river path, passes Williamson PK-8 school, goes through a neighborhood and a recreation area, and returns to the turnaround at 2.08 miles. The course surface is primarily asphalt, described as very flat, and will be marked with cones, directional arrows, and other markers.
The event follows Backyard Ultra rules: each loop must be completed within one hour, starts are hourly with a bell and warnings, no personal aid is allowed on the course, and the winner is the last runner to complete a loop. There will be a single aid station at the start/finish offering water, hydration, food, and porta potties. Participants may keep personal supplies at the start/finish and may set up camp there to rest between loops. If heavy rain saturates a section of the path, organizers will redirect that section to the other side of the guardrail.
