The Girl Scout Island Ultra takes place on Rose Dhu Island in Savannah, Georgia, a location notable as the birthplace of the Girl Scouts of the USA. The event is hosted at the Rose Dhu Island Camp and focuses on supporting and empowering athletes while honoring the legacy of the organization's founder, Juliette Gordon Lowe. This trail race utilizes a 6.25-mile loop that is flat and non-technical, winding through the island's cabins and wooded areas.
Distance Options
Participants can choose from several distances:
- 100 miles (16 laps)
- 100k (10 laps)
- 50k (5 laps)
- 50k Relay (2 to 5 participants splitting 10k laps)
- 10k (1 lap)
Logistics and Course Details
The course is measured by a walking wheel and is chip-timed. All runners must pass over the timing mat for each lap. There is a total time limit of 32 hours for all distances. One central aid station is available, which features nutritional supplies including Girl Scout cookies. This is a cupless race, meaning athletes must carry their own hydration vessels.
Facilities and Accommodations
Camping options are available on the island, including cabins, perches, and elevated tent platforms with access to showers and bathrooms. Primitive and vehicle camping is also permitted for ultra-distance participants with prior notification. Please note that RVs are not allowed on the island. The medical tent provides minor injury care and includes private breastfeeding accommodations.
Recognition
All finishers receive a medal and a patch of completion. Runners who complete the 100-mile distance are awarded a belt buckle.
