Frosty Squatchy : Frosty Fat Sass Trail Party, January 31, 2026

The event is a trail party in West Orange, New Jersey at the Turtleback Rock Picnic Area in South Mountain Reservation, located off Walker Road. Participants can choose among timed loop options and a 5K loop that starts and finishes at the picnic area. Portapottys are available in the parking lot.

Distances and event options:

  • 5K loop starting and finishing at Turtleback Rock Picnic Area.
  • 3 hour timed event.
  • 6 hour timed event.
  • 3 hour rucking division with weight classes 15 lb and 30 lb.

The 5K loop has 289 feet of elevation gain and combines wide carriage roads with technical singletrack. The first mile is a wide dirt trail. There is a very rocky 200+ foot descent near mile one and a 100 foot climb near mile 2.5. The final mile is singletrack with rocks and roots. Organizers provide trail condition reports and winter traction recommendations; grippy shoes are suggested for longer efforts.

This is a self-supported fat-ass style event with no finishers' swag or aid stations. Participants must record loops on the loop board; 5K finishers record their time on the clipboard. Pacer privileges are allowed at any time for participants over 60 and for athletes with disabilities; pacers for others require prior approval.

Funds raised will be donated to the South Mountain Conservancy. Since 2018 the event has raised over $20,000 for the conservancy. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
