Four Fans

Four Fans is a clockwise fell race over upland moorland and open fell terrain. Distances offered include:

  • 18 km / 11.2 mi

The course involves approximately 1200 m of ascent and reaches up to about 750 m in height. The route is entirely unmarked and includes a significant amount of route choice across remote terrain. Underfoot conditions can be very rough with bogs, tussocks, boulders and steep ascents or descents. There are a couple of river crossings and sections where runners must cross and re-cross a mountain road.

Competitors must demonstrate sufficient fell running and navigational competency as a condition of entry. Full kit including waterproofs is required. GPS devices may be used for route finding but runners using them may be recorded as non competitive if declared to the race official. There will be vetting on the day and there may be checkpoint cut offs; failure to reach a cut off will result in compulsory retirement.

The race requires visiting four checkpoints in order: Fan Fawr cairn (not the trig) GR SN 969193; Fan Llia true summit GR SN 938186; Fan Nedd trig point GR SN 913184; and Fan Frynych trig point GR SN 958228. The assembly location is the lay-by opposite Storey Arms on the A470 between Merthyr and Brecon (GR 983203). Some details are to be confirmed.
