Four Fans Fell Race

Four Fans is an AM category fell race of about 18 km with approximately 1200 m of ascent, scheduled for 7 June 2026. Event headquarters is the lay-by opposite Storey Arms on the A470 between Merthyr and Brecon (GR 983203). The route is clockwise this year and the race includes four checkpoints that must be visited in order: Fan Fawr cairn (not the trig point) GR SN 969193; Fan Llia true summit GR SN 938186; Fan Nedd trig point GR SN 913184; Fan Frynych trig point GR SN 958228.

Navigational skills using map and compass are a condition of entry and GPS devices are not permitted for navigation except in an emergency. Fell running experience is required and the Race Organiser may ask competitors to confirm their experience. Competitors must carry full kit and there will be a kit check at the start. The race is limited to 50 places and entry is via Fabian4 with an entry fee of £7 for members and £9 for non members. An early start is available for slower runners with appropriate experience.

There is a compulsory cut off at checkpoint 3 (Fan Nedd) of 120 minutes; competitors failing to meet this time will be retired. Specific hazards include unmarked summits, remote rough terrain, unmarked road crossings on the Heol Senni, two river crossings, and fences and walls where jumping will lead to disqualification. There are no toilets at the start; public toilets are about a 10 minute walk away at the Pont ar Daf car park. In an emergency use a whistle (six blasts repeated every minute) and call 112 or 999 asking for Mountain Rescue. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
