Man v Horse : Green Events, Llanwrtyd Wells
Man v Horse is a long-standing race organised by Green Events in Llanwrtyd Wells that began in June 1980. The format pits human runners against horses over a mountainous course. The route was adjusted in 1982 to produce closer finishes between runners and horses.
The event uses electronic timing introduced in 2014, with automatic tags for each competitor. Results are published online on Results Base. The overall event duration is 6½ hours. Organisers enforce cut-off times: 3 hours for horses at the mid-way veterinary check and 4½ hours for runners at the second relay changeover point, which is approximately 14 miles into the course. Organisers note that marshals are volunteers and the event is not intended as a leisure walk.
Prize arrangements include an escalating jackpot for a runner who beats the first horse and rider; the jackpot starts at £500 and increases by £500 each year the event takes place until it is won. For 2026 the jackpot stands at £500. Since 2025 there is a cash prize of £250 for the first horse and rider to finish and pass the vet check. The event is cup-less, so competitors who require water at stations should carry a collapsible cup or their own hydration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
