Flying Acorn Trail Run
The event takes place at Squirrel Hills Trail Park near Minnedosa, Manitoba. It uses community trails made up of older double track and newer single track sections and offers multiple race distances.
Distances offered:
- 21.1 km half marathon (two laps of the 10 km route)
- 10.6 km approximately, with about 190 m elevation gain
- 5.4 km approximately, with about 90 m elevation gain
The 10 km course begins mostly on grass double track with connector single track, then moves to dirt single track along the Perimeter Loop. That second half includes a gradual 2 km uphill, a fast 2 km downhill, and a final climb back to the trailhead. The 5 km follows the Perimeter Loop, composed of the Cenovus Energy Unity Trail and Les Métis Way. The half marathon is two repeats of the 10 km route, with roughly 380 m total elevation gain.
Two aid stations are placed on the 10 km route, providing up to four opportunities to stop. 5 km participants have access to a midcourse aid station. This is a cupless event and participants should bring their own water bottle. Runners with specific dietary needs are encouraged to carry preferred snacks.
Bib pickup is at the Sunrise Credit Union Pavilion at the trailhead on the evening before and on race morning. First aid is available at the start and finish and on call throughout the park. Over the ear headphones are not permitted; a single earbud is allowed. All participants receive a Headsweats event shirt and a custom finisher medal. Awards are given to the top three male and female finishers. Post race snacks and pizza are provided, including a Post Race Snack Shack sponsored by Heritage Co-op and pizza from Pizza Cabin. Members of the Manitoba Association of Trail Runners earn UT of MB points. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
