Escarpment Trail Run 30K : event overview

The Escarpment Trail Run is a 30-kilometer trail event in Windham, NY offered as an in-person race in late July and a virtual option through August. Entry is by application and must be approved by the race director; submitting the registration form does not guarantee acceptance. The director reviews applications within three business days and the field is limited to 275 runners or until a specified entry deadline, whichever comes first.

Qualifying standards are required. Acceptable evidence includes completing the Escarpment course under six hours within two years, running a road or trail marathon under 4:15 within the last year, or finishing specified races within qualifying times in the last year. There is also an alternate review process where applicants may submit GPS or Strava data from a trail race of 18 miles or longer for evaluation. Entries that do not meet the standards will not be accepted.

The course is described as extremely rocky with boulders, downed trees, gullies, hidden roots, steep climbs and steep downhills, and sections along cliffs. Natural hazards noted include bees, slippery rocks, porcupines, severe lightning, and potential wildlife encounters. Wave starts are used with 15 runners per wave and five-minute gaps between waves. A bus option from the finish to the start is available for a fee; there is no return bus. Pets must be leashed with proof of rabies vaccination. Virtual participants run self-supported, must submit results to receive official finish credit, and may earn qualifying status if under six hours. All registration fees support event maintenance.
