Equinox Marathon and Relay

The Equinox Marathon is a fall road and trail event held at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, with start and finish at the Student Recreation Center Field. The event was founded in 1963 and is held amid autumn colors on a course that is mostly trails with some dirt and paved road sections.

The full course distance is 26.2 Miles and includes a climb up Ester Dome followed by a long descent back to campus. Marathon competitors face about 3,300 feet of vertical gain. Weather and course conditions on race day can vary from dry and mild to wind, snow, and mud. There are nine aid stations along the course.

Event formats:

• Marathon Run: 26.2 Miles
• Marathon Relay: 26.2 Miles as a three person relay with three 8 to 9 mile legs
• Marathon Hike: 26.2 Miles intended for hikers expecting 7 to 10 hours on course

Registration details differ by event. Marathon Run and Marathon Hike have a listed fee of $100.00 with a $25 discount for juniors age 17 and under, current university students, and active military. The Marathon Relay has a listed fee of $245.00 with a $75 discount for the same eligible groups. Team registration assigns the first registrant as team captain, who pays the full team fee and manages team membership.
