Emerald Mountain Epic

The Emerald Mountain Epic is a two-day trail event held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The event takes place on a course consisting of 100% dirt and approximately 90% singletrack trails. Participants navigate through various landscapes including aspen forests, open meadows, and wild sage gardens. All races begin at the Howelsen Hill Ski Area and traverse the backcountry of Routt County.

The event is organized as a fundraiser for local nonprofit organizations, including Routt County Riders and Partners for Youth. The mountain bike races are held on the first day, followed by the trail running events on the second day. The course features significant elevation changes, with the full loop including approximately 3,300 feet of gain.

Available trail running distances include:

  • Marathon: A 26.2-mile course with approximately 3,300 feet of elevation gain.
  • Half Marathon: A 13.1-mile course with approximately 1,500 feet of elevation gain.
  • Duo Marathon: A team category where two participants complete the half marathon simultaneously.

Special combined categories, known as Royalty of the Boat, are available for athletes who participate in both the mountain bike and running events over the two-day period. The event provides stocked aid stations, a post-race meal, and a vendor village at the finish line. Total participation is limited to 500 racers per day to manage the impact on the trail system.
