The Ely Mountain Trail Race takes place at Balsam Forebay, Shaver Lake, CA. The event offers two trail distances and is capped at 250 runners. Courses include significant climbing and mountain terrain.

  • 14K (8.7 mi) - about 1,800 ft climb.
  • 8K (4.9 mi) - about 800 ft climb.

The 14K includes a steep ascent up Ely Mountain with sweeping views of the Sierra and Shaver Lake, then returns on singletrack and dirt roads. The 8K reaches the top via a shorter route and returns to the same finish area.

Logistics, awards and course details

Bib pickup is available the day before at Fleet Feet Fresno (1:00–3:00pm) and on race day at Balsam Forebay (6:55am). Parking is along the dirt road shoulder near the Highway 168 entrance to Balsam Forebay; some walking from parking to the start may be required. Aid stations: 14K at miles 1.5, 4.5, and 6.6; 8K at miles 1.5 and 3.1. Supplies include GU Roctane drink, GU gels, water, and snacks.

Course marking uses orange ribbon, flags, cones, and signage at turns. The 14K has a granite section under one mile that is steep and rugged; runners must follow orange cones and not the nearby mountain bike trail. A timed King and Queen of the Mountain prize awards $100 to the top male and female up the Ely Mountain climb; eligibility requires a Strava/GPS recording and immediate upload to the Strava segment leaderboard. Results, awards, and finisher items are provided, including top 3 overall, age-group awards in 10-year increments, custom finisher medals, and event shirts.
