Ely Mountain Trail Race

Shaver Lake, United States • 2 Aug 2026

Event

The Ely Mountain Trail Race takes place at Balsam Forebay in Shaver Lake, CA. It offers two trail distances:

  • 14K (8.7 mi)
  • 8K (4.9 mi)

The race is capped at 250 runners. Entry price for each event is listed as $54, including a $4 fee.

Course and logistics

The 14K route includes about 1,800 feet of climbing, with roughly a 1,000-foot ascent on Ely Mountain. The 8K climbs about 800 feet. A granite climb on the 14K is steep and rugged, about a mile long; runners are instructed to follow course cones and signage, and a marshal will be present on that section. Courses are marked with orange ribbon, flags and cones on the granite section, and signage at all turns.

Aid stations:

  • 14K: mile 1.5, 4.5, and 6.6
  • 8K: mile 1.5 and 3.1
Supplies include GU Roctane drink, GU gels, water, and salty and sweet snacks.

Bib pickup is available the day before at Fleet Feet Fresno and on race day at Balsam Forebay. Parking will be along the dirt road shoulder near the Highway 168 entrance to Balsam Forebay, about 5 miles past Sierra Marina.

Awards and additional info

There are finisher medals, event shirts, and podium awards for top finishers and age-group places. The 14K features a King & Queen of the Mountain prize based on a Strava/GPS segment; eligibility requires recording the segment and uploading activity for leaderboard verification. Post-race food and coffee will be provided. Volunteers are being recruited for several race roles. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
