Eastern States: Blackout - Night-focused three-night camp
Eastern States: BLACKOUT is a three-night camp in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, held at the Ponderosa Lodge. The program concentrates on night running by using real sections of the Eastern States 100 course to practice running after dark under guided, supported conditions.
Each night features long, point-to-point trail segments on the ES100 course. Routes are rugged and remote, with steep climbs, rocky singletrack, creek crossings, and long technical descents. Night runs will include segments that are likely in the 10–20 mile range and are intended to replicate race-night conditions.
Nightly segments (approximate):
- Night 1: Hyner to Big Trail - 13.4 mi, +3,246 ft / -1,938 ft
- Night 2: Tomb Flats to Blackwell - 17.6 mi, +2,943 ft / -2,815 ft
- Night 3: Big Trail to Tomb Flats - 6.3 mi, +1,397 ft / -2,765 ft
Support and logistics are limited on course. Transportation is provided to and from each run segment. Participants receive a light meal before runs and a full breakfast afterward. Each night includes one staffed aid station (Dry Run on Night 1, Cedar Run on Night 2); there is no aid on Night 3. Expect stretches of roughly 8 to 10 miles without access to aid and plan to carry lights, fluids, nutrition, and weather-appropriate layers.
Daytime hours are open for rest or optional activities and informal clinics. Registration covers three nights lodging (single-person bed), transportation, evening light meals, breakfasts, and access to daytime options. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
