Franklin Academy Double Helix Race : May 17, 2026
The Double Helix Race is a campus running event held at Franklin Academy in East Haddam, CT. The main event is a 1.75 mile looped course that weaves around the campus in a double helix pattern. The course surface is mostly packed, rocky dirt with some pavement and brief grass sections, several hills, and a fast downhill finish on River Rd.
Additional run opportunities for children are held on the soccer field: the younger kids race (ages 6 and under) is a half lap and the kids race (ages 7 to 12) is a full lap. Both kids races are free and open to racers ages 12 and under.
Prizes are awarded three deep using reused trophies and occasional Franklin Academy swag. A single annual $20 cash prize is available for a new course record; the current record is 10:33 set in 2025. Other awards include categories for students, faculty, age and gender divisions, and a canine companion category. Some informal "spirit of the race" awards may also be given.
The event is held rain or shine. There are two water stops on the course with dog bowls; the loop design allows multiple passes by a water stop. On-site day-of registration is available for a higher fee. Parking uses the Pond House/Dining Hall entrance (GPS 100 River Rd). Two indoor single-use bathrooms are available in the Dining Hall near registration and the start/finish area. Volunteers are requested to serve as course monitors, timers, or cheer squad members.
