Dorset Hillfort Ultra
The Dorset Hillfort Ultra is an endurance running event that starts and finishes in Maiden Newton, Dorset. The course covers a distance of approximately 35.9 miles and features roughly 1,300m of ascent. The route connects several ancient hillforts and historic landmarks, including Eggardon Hill, Abbotsbury Castle, and Maiden Castle, offering views of Lyme Bay, Portland Bill, and the Jurassic Coast.
The terrain consists of approximately 80% off-road surfaces, including old turf and tracks that may be uneven, muddy, or hard-baked. The remaining sections utilize public rights of way and quiet roads. Participants follow a route that includes a portion of the South West Coast Path inland route and passes by the Hardy Monument.
There are six intermediate aid stations, often referred to as "Cake Stops," which provide water, squash, cake, and flapjacks. Sandwiches are available at the Maiden Castle station. Gluten-free and vegan options can be provided if requested in advance. This event does not provide plastic bottles or cups, so runners must carry their own water containers to refill at these points.
Mandatory equipment includes:
- A waterproof jacket and hat
- A charged mobile phone
- A water bottle or hydration pack
- Emergency food such as a Mars bar
Navigation is supported by available GPX files, maps, and turn-by-turn notes. While marshals are positioned at busy crossings, runners are responsible for their own navigation and safety. The event has a 10-hour cut-off time, and timing points are located at 17 and 27 miles. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
