Dorset Hillfort Ultra, Maiden Newton, Dorset
The Dorset Hillfort Ultra is an off road ultramarathon that follows public rights of way and a small amount of quiet road around West Dorset hillforts. The course measures about 35.9 miles and includes approximately 1,300 m of ascent. The majority of the route is off road on turf and tracks and may be uneven, muddy or hard baked in places.
The route runs from Maiden Newton and passes notable landmarks and sections including Eggardon Hill, the old railway line and Uploders, Abbotsbury Castle, Hardy Monument, Maiden Castle and Muckleford, with views out to Lyme Bay and Portland Bill. There are six intermediate aid stations, two of which are intermediate timing points at 17 and 27 miles. Water and squash are available at all controls and participants must refill their own drink containers. Cake and flapjack are available at each control and sandwiches are provided at the Maiden Castle control; gluten free and vegan options are available if notified in advance.
Navigation support includes GPX files, maps and turn by turn notes, and marshalls will be positioned at busy crossings. The event requires a degree of self sufficiency; minimum recommended kit includes an emergency nutrition bar, a charged mobile phone with data off to preserve battery, a waterproof jacket and hat, and a water bottle or Camelbak. Gates must be closed and the Countryside Code observed. Cut off times are based on a 10 hour finishing standard. On street parking and basic facilities are available at the start and finish.
